At the time, it was supposed to serve a different purpose and was dedicated to Augustinian Friars, with the original idea of the convent being to provide a space for the brotherhood, which it did until the completion of the church in the 15th century.


Now it is known for a different reason. During the Age of Portugal’s conquests, a man named Pedro Álvares Cabral is generally credited as being the first European seafarer to sail to Brazil.

While this claim may be challenged, his legacy continues to live on, and even the square in front of this church is named after him, which is no surprise, as he and his wife are buried here.
