Criminal syndicates operating out of China have turned fraudulent messaging into an enormously lucrative enterprise, netting over $1 billion in the past three years.

The volume of fake toll payment alerts is now 3.5 times more frequent than in January 2024, with Americans receiving 330,000 of these texts in a single day.
Using a new method, scammers attach stolen credit card numbers to Apple or Google Wallets in Asia and distribute them to U.S. accomplices, who then use the wallets for purchases that often go undetected by traditional fraud systems.
