Located in the Tagus River, the castle was constructed on a rock island 18 metres above sea level. The castle can only be visited by boat, in a trip that costs €4 and leads visitors to the outstanding work done by the Knights Templar.
Besides being recognised as a Templar’s castle, its origins date back to the occupation of Roman Empire citizens.
The name of the village, however, recalls the Moorish occupation of the current Portuguese territory, as Almourol reminds the Arabic word Al-morolan, which means “High Rock”.
The castle is the home of various myths and legends, making it really worth visiting.
