Grupo Coral de Lagos is well established in the Algarve; to keep an organisation running for 50 years is a great achievement. A large measure of its success is down to our talented conductor, Ms Vera Batista, who leads the choir with musical precision, also with tolerance and humour in evening practices twice a week.

The choir performs a range of musical material, ranging from Baroque to Duke Ellington and including pieces by contemporary Portuguese composers and songwriters. We regularly perform at festivals throughout Portugal and were recently invited to participate at the International Choral Festival in Marrakech which includes 16 choirs from nine countries.

At present, we need more men to balance out the strong Soprano and Contralto sections. The age of choir members ranges from late teens up to retirees. We have singers of several nationalities and Vera gives directions in Portuguese and English.

Though not a specifically religious organisation, the choir is lucky enough to be able to rehearse in the historic and beautifully refurbished church, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Igreja das Freiras). Its acoustics are wonderful and many of the choir’s local performances are held in this splendid setting.
