MEO has started installing 5G on the Lisbon Metro's Yellow Line and is modernising the mobile network on the Porto Metro, which will be completed this month, the operator announced.

"After the start of operations of the MEO 5G network on the Lisbon Metro's Red Line, the company will continue, in 2025, with the plan to modernise and reinforce its mobile network on the remaining lines of the Lisbon Metro and the Porto Metro," the company said in a statement.

The expansion works "have already begun on the Yellow Line, with the Rato, Marquês de Pombal, Picoas, Saldanha and Campo Pequeno stations being the first to benefit from this modernisation."

MEO anticipates that the intervention on this line "will be completed by the end of the year, followed by expansion to the Green and Blue Lines during 2026."

According to the company, "this is a technically demanding project, given the specificities of the underground environments and the fact that the interventions are carried out at night, taking advantage of the maintenance windows of the metro lines."

Similarly, MEO is implementing the modernisation of the mobile network on the Porto Metro, "reinforcing it and guaranteeing full 5G coverage, with its completion expected by the end of this year."

The implementation of 5G in the Lisbon and Porto Metro systems "reaffirms Meo's commitment to investing in the modernization of infrastructure and the expansion of the 5G network, which currently covers 96.95% of the Portuguese population," emphasises the company led by Ana Figueiredo.

MEO highlights "the decisive contribution of the Lisbon and Porto Metro systems to the success of this project, whose support is essential for the efficient implementation of the various modernization stages," it concludes.
