"Obviously, we have an issue at the borders [the waiting lines] and we are working intensively with ANA to redesign the departure area to make it easier. But - I was a very frequent passenger - no one can be happy with the passenger experience nowadays at national airports," said Hugo Espírito Santo, in Macau.
The governor was speaking at the 50th National Congress of the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT), after the audience heard the president of the Board of Directors of ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal remind them that Lisbon airport handles 36 million passengers and was designed for 22 million.
"We are in a process of constant improvement of the facilities. (...) It's a permanently open-hearted operation," said José Luís Arnaut, citing constraints of various kinds.
Both had already mentioned the waiting lines for border control as a serious problem in Lisbon.
The Secretary of State says that this doesn't justify everything.
"I think that, in addition to everything we are doing [in terms of improvements], we have airports that are cramped, with narrow corridors, with the wrong indicators from the point of view of service quality, even from the point of view of baggage delivery," warned the governor.
“Issues”
"We have repeatedly had some issues with waiting times at the X-ray machines, with passengers with reduced mobility (...). And nowadays, we have enormous problems with waiting times. We also have to look and remember that this is not just a problem with passports and borders. It is also necessary to look at and reassess what constitutes quality of service at airports. And this is something we have also been insisting on: we [the executive branch] and ANAC [the regulator] with ANA, in order to really make a qualitative leap here," he explained.
Hugo Espírito Santo pointed out the need to always have safety present in this sector.
"I look at the safety data that NAV [air traffic control] and ANAC give me. In short, this leaves me somewhat concerned. These are machines that are very close to their limit and, therefore, I have some concerns," he admitted.
Earlier, the official had assured that the executive branch is closely monitoring the queues at Lisbon airport, admitting that they are an embarrassment for the government, which hopes to have resolved them by the summer.
"The border situation is an embarrassment for the government. There's no other way to describe it. We have to be humble about what we do, and at this moment, it's an embarrassment, and the only thing that could be done is to apologize," he said.

Please we do not want excuses from the government. No apologies! Only do your work. It is not even economical. As a business man outside of EU I would think twice to make business in Portugal. I won’t wait for it hours for immigration. And as a tourist specifically I would think why to fly TAP non stop if I’m not faster than with a flight stopover for example in Paris where it costs me 15 mins to immigrate to Schengen. Nicer to sit in an airline drinking a coffee instead waiting in queues staying in a very ugly building. And at every corner I hear Portugal is the best but be careful there many other countries with a warmer welcome.

I have flown into Lisbon and Faro airports, but will not do so again! They are terrible with tge wait times and not a good first impression of Portugal!!! I have not tried Porto airport or Madeira, so hopefully they are better? I love to visit Portugal, except for the airports!

I'm spending Christmas in France then going over to UK in January. It should be easy to fly from Lisbon to Nantes Atlantique and then to Gatwick and vice versa. But I'm going to drive. The last time I returned through Lisbon Delgado some passport machines were not working and there was no assistance, and the time before that it was an over an hour's wait to get through the manned controls., so there was already a problem. The machines were lined up in plastic wrappers waiting to be installed.I read that Portugal attracts IT workers so why are there so many problems? I going to drive because it's less stressful.

Having left Lisboa 2days ago via the airport for our return trip to Australia, I can honestly say, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Added to our trip was the complication of needing a wheelchair at the last minute. We were treated amazingly by all ground staff, whizzed through security and passport control. People were respectful, professional and courteous. The queues were minimal except for check-in desks but that related to indiv airline staffing. We'd dreaded the whole thing based on what we had read but the reality was very different. Expect the worst and be delighted - mind set shift. Allow plenty of time - we were there 3 hours ahead of departure. Treat staff kindly - they really are working hard to do their best. Follow the signs and inform yourself of which queue you should be in for immigration - it minimises your own wait time and doesn't clog up a label you shouldn't be in. Your duty to be informed. We are professional travellers - and, believe be, there are plenty of worse airports.....

Lisbon airport has a 2nd floor which is for arrivals yet the agents on arrival send the passengers into the main departure area cause even further congestion.... Why in the world don't you use the upstairs for arrivals! Bunch of horses asses in this country. The EU should drop the hammer on Portugal and it lack of control over all government agencies from ANA airports to AIMA!

Although I have been through Faro and Lisbon airport many times over the last couple of years and have been caught up in some horrendous queues where many people have missed their flights I have also had good experiences as well. My last two times travelling from Stansted at weekends has also been equally horrendous. Although arriving in plenty of time I have had to purchase Fast Track whilst in a non-moving queue through security. Had I not done so I would have missed my flight. Both places are absolutely shambolic at processing people through airports at peak times.
