I spoke with Maria Lopes, founder of Moces and Artists & Fleas, an alternative market that supports local artists and energises the Algarve's cultural scene.
How did Artists & Fleas first start in the Algarve, and why Olhão in particular?
Artists & Fleas began in Faro in 2022, born of the desire to create a meeting place for artists, makers, and conscious consumers. After a few editions in Faro, we met with the Olhão Municipality, and they wanted to invest in our project. It turned out to be a perfect match. Olhão is a vibrant, authentic, unpolished coastal town with a strong creative pulse and a community that values culture, nature, and slow living. The city’s eclectic energy mirrors the market's spirit.
What was the original inspiration for creating this type of creative market?
We wanted to create a space where creativity, sustainability, and community could truly come together. I’ve been involved in organising flea markets in Lisbon since 2013, and when I moved to the Algarve five years ago, I quickly realised there were no cool, youthful, artist-driven flea markets here. A place where you could find traditional artisans side by side with vintage fashion, prints, vinyl records, and unique handmade pieces.
So, our goal became building a safe, vibrant space where the younger generation — and all curious minds — could meet, discover new creators, enjoy great live music, grab food & drinks, and support local businesses in an authentic way.
How has the vision evolved since the first edition?
It evolved into something much bigger than a market. Today, Artists & Fleas is a cultural event — a space for artistic expression, wellness, music, upcycling, and social connection. It has become a community hub and a place where creators can grow their brands, create new projects with other artists and expand financially.

What makes Olhão a unique setting for a creative market like this?
Olhão has soul. It’s multicultural, rooted in tradition yet open to innovation. It's a place where fishermen, expats, digital nomads, and young creatives all intersect. The market thrives in this blend of authenticity, diversity, and relaxed coastal energy.
Since MOCES (a non-profit organisation) is behind Artists & Fleas, in what ways does the association’s mission shape the market’s identity and atmosphere?
MOCES works with three pillars — social, cultural, and environmental impact — and Artists & Fleas reflects that mission. Everything we curate, from the vendors to the workshops to the music, is meant to support local talent, promote creativity, and inspire sustainability. The atmosphere is inclusive, warm, multicultural, and consciously crafted.

How do you choose the vendors, artists, and makers who participate?
We curate based on originality, authenticity, and alignment with our values. We prioritise handmade, upcycled, small-batch, artistic, and purpose-driven brands. We aim to have a mix of crafts, visual art, vintage, design, wellness, and food, always keeping diversity and quality at the centre.
What kind of community has grown around the market over the years?
A beautiful one: artists, artisans, designers, musicians, families, travellers, expats, and locals who return month after month. Many creators joined us as beginners and today are full-time small business owners. There’s a real sense of belonging.
How do you support emerging creators or small independent brands?
We give them visibility, opportunities, content creation support, and access to our network. Many artists got their first clients and confidence through Artists & Fleas.
What makes the market different from other fairs?
The curation, the atmosphere, and the intention. It doesn’t feel commercial; it feels human, cool, artistic, and community-driven. Every edition has its own emotion.
How would you describe the vibe?
Cool, artistic, sunny, free-spirited, multicultural, and deeply warm. A place to breathe, explore, and feel inspired.
How do workshops, performances, and yoga fit into the market?
They are part of our DNA. We want the market to be an experience, not just a place to buy things. Activities create connections and expand creativity. We curate intentionally: a bit of everything, always balanced. We plan the layout, the flow, and the programming so the market feels dynamic rather than overwhelming.
Do you collaborate with the municipality?
Yes. We've collaborated with different municipalities and local organisations to bring culture, sustainability, and community-driven events to public spaces.
How important is sustainability?
It’s central. Vintage, upcycling, handmade production, and circularity are core values. We want to shift consumption habits. We take measures to stay environmentally friendly, including handmade-first curation, no single-use plastics at stalls, sustainable materials for signage, trash separation, and supporting creators who use eco-friendly methods.
Do you have any success stories?
Yes! Several creators who started with us now have online stores, international clients, or full-time businesses.
What are the biggest challenges in running the market?
Weather, seasonality, tourism flows, and the logistics of outdoor events.
How do you adapt?
Flexible layouts, backups for weather, varied locations across the Algarve, and strong communication. Small details create a big impact.
Do you have plans for expansion?
Yes, more cities, more themed editions, collaborations with cultural institutions, wellness experiences, and maybe a creative festival. Growing as a cultural brand, a creative movement rather than just a market.
Do you have a favourite moment?
When the market opens, and I watch creators setting up with excitement, and again at the end of the day, when everyone is smiling and connecting.
A vendor or art piece that marked you?
Several. Especially artists who began shy and unsure and later told us the market changed their lives or helped them believe in their work.
What motivates you personally?
To create spaces where people feel truly alive. Places rooted in creativity, where community has the power to change lives, spark hope, and bring more beauty into the world. What drives me is watching artists shine, witnessing their work touch people and transform moments.
