Followers of Jesus were gathered together when they experienced the presence of God in a powerful way. Acts 2 tells us, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4). They began speaking in other languages they had never spoken before, and visitors from many nations who were in Jerusalem heard “the wonders of God declared in (their) own tongues” (Acts 2:11).
People were amazed and curious about what was happening. This became the setting for Peter’s first sermon, where he proclaimed the good news of Jesus Christ. That day, around 3,000 people were baptised, and the church began to grow both inwardly in faith and outwardly across the world.

What happened on Pentecost reminds Christians that the church was never meant to stay hidden behind closed doors. God’s Spirit was given to empower ordinary people to share the love, hope, and forgiveness found in Jesus Christ. Today we celebrate Pentecost not only to remember what happened long ago, but to remind ourselves that God still works through people today like you and me, empowering us to share the good news of Christ all through the world.
