Earthquake of magnitude 4.1 felt in Faial, Pico and São Jorge

An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale was felt on Thursday, 21 November, in the Faial, Pico and São Jorge islands, the Azores Seismovulcanic Information and Surveillance Centre (CIVISA) reported on 22 November.

According to a statement from CIVISA, the epicentre of the earthquake, felt at 10:47pm Thursday, was recorded "about 32 kilometres west of Capelo" in Faial.

According to the information available until 5am Friday, the shaking was felt with maximum intensity IV / V, on the Modified Mercalli scale, in the parishes of Capelo and Castelo Branco, in the municipality of Horta.

In the same municipality, it was felt with intensity IV in the parishes of Praia do Norte and Feteira and with intensity III / IV in the parishes of Cedros, Salon, Riverside, Flamengos, Pedro Miguel, Praia do Almoxarife, Conceição, Matriz and Angustias.

On the island of Pico, it was felt with intensity III in the parish of São Roque do Pico (municipality of São Roque do Pico) and the parish of São Caetano (municipality of Madalena), indicated CIVISA.

Intensity III was also recorded on São Jorge Island, in the parish of Velas (municipality of Velas).

"CIVISA continues to monitor the progress of the situation by issuing further press releases if necessary," the authorities said.
