The legislative process for decriminalising medically assisted death will continue in the parliament, after the “no” to the referendum on euthanasia, decided by the deputies, with a final vote in December.

Eight months after the approval, in general, of the five law projects (PS, BE, PAN, ENP and Liberal Initiative), and after the “no” to the popular consultation, the debate of the diploma will continue in the working group created to the effect on the Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees committee.

If the law is approved, in a final global vote, in the Assembly of the Republic, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, can keep the decision in his hands a few weeks from the presidential elections.

Asked about the legislative process of euthanasia he said: "My decision will not be an affirmation of personal positions, it will represent the analysis that a President of the Republic has to make about the situation in Portuguese society at the moment when asked to consider whether he promulgates or not”.
