According to the “Globalisation Statistics” of INE, between 2010 and 2018 the average monthly remuneration was always higher in foreign subsidiaries, €393.70 more on average than in domestic companies.


This same trend is registered in productivity, with foreign subsidiaries registering on average, between 2010 and 2018, apparent labour productivity higher than that of domestic companies by around €18,100, with this indicator increasing from €43,237 in 2010 to €44,487 in 2018.

According to INE, the investment rate of foreign subsidiaries in 2018 (23.1%) was also higher than that of domestic companies (21.9 percent), showing contradictory developments compared to 2017 (-0.3 and +1.4 percentage points, respectively).


In 2018, the absolute values of these indicators were higher in national companies, as in the previous year.


Last year, Statistics Portugal reported the existence in Portugal of 6,825 subsidiaries of foreign companies in Portugal, which employed around 487,000 people, representing, respectively, 1.7 percent and 15.7 percent of the total number of non-financial companies.
