Sitío is famous for being the spot where surfers ride the monster waves that placed Nazaré on the international big-wave map.
According to newspaper Correio da Manhã, the man, identified by the newspaper as Dominik Loyen, had travelled across Europe from Switzerland, where he lived, with his dog Cliffy, to Portugal, to meet up with friends and base-jump in Nazaré.
He was with two friends, a Russian and a Norwegian national, when he jumped on Monday at around noon, and his parachute failed to open.
The incident, which was witnessed by the man’s friends, his dog and passersby, was also caught on camera – including by the victim’s own head-cam – and went viral on social media.
He jumped side-by-side with a Portuguese base jumper, who saw the entire incident unfold.
Nazaré port captain Paulo Agostinho said Nazaré’s Sítio is a sought-after spot among base jumpers. A Swedish man died after base-jumping in the same spot in July 2013.
