Sousa, ranked 69th in the world, beat Jubb, the winner of the US university championship and ranked 431rd in the world, by 6-0, 6-3, 6-7 (with a tie break score of 8-10)and 6-1, in a total of two hours and 16 minutes.

This is only the second time that Sousa has made it through the first round in six times playing at Wimbledon.

In the second round he is to face the winner of the match between Croatia's Marin Cilic, seeded 13th in the tournament, and France's Adrian Mannarino.
