There are 10,761,156 voters with active electoral capacity, while in the previous elections in May 2014 there were 9,696,481.

The number of voters residing abroad went from less than 300,000 in 2014 elections to 1,431,825 currently, due to the automatic registration process, Portugal’s minister of internal affairs Eduardo Cabrita said.

In total there are 1.4 million, of which 583,680 are residents outside Europe and 848,145 are registered as residents in Europe.

There are also 10,751 citizens from other European Union countries registered, which also means an increase compared to the 8,981 registered for the previous elections.

Faro, the capital of Algarve, southern Portugal, is the district with the highest number of foreign registrations (4,841).
