After making many plane journeys between Ireland and Portugal, the nurse, who will be returning permanently, has decided that the last journey between the two countries will be made in an environmentally friendly way, by using the ferry, trains and her bicycle.

The journey starts on Thursday, when the nurse will catch a ferry between Dublin and Cherbourg in northern France, from where she will cycle to Hendaye, on the French border with Spain.

"The idea was to get to know another culture, another country and reduce my ecological footprint, and to raise awareness".

For the 1,000km bicycle trip, the nurse decided to try to raise one euro for every kilometre and donate it to Greenpeace.

The fundraising is open to anyone who wants to participate and donate.

"I chose Greenpeace because it is an organisation that I follow and that I consider a source of inspiration."

After co-creating, the "Seed" project, an initiative focused on healthy and sustainable lifestyles, she realised that human beings are more than what they eat or drink and that they are influenced by other factors, one of which is the environment.

Her taste for the environment took her to Dublin, where she took a course in Nutrition and Health.

"On this trip I hope to meet people, initiatives and organisations committed to contributing to sustainable practices for environmental, social and economic well-being".

So far, Ana Santos has managed to raise €571.
