Red coral found growing off the Algarve coast will be protected with its own legislation to prevent people from removing it

The Ministries of the Sea and the Environment and Climate Action are preparing a specific decree-law on red coral so that anyone caught removing it suffers "effective and rigorous" fines.

The Algarve University’s Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMar) has already identified «gardens of red coral » off the coast of Sagres, Lagos and Portimão.
