Portugal registered a further 78 deaths today related to covid-19 and 2,597 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, the lowest number of the last week.

As of 1 December, 2,401 new cases had been registered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has already registered 5,041 deaths and 325,071 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, with 74,187 cases being active today, 269 fewer than on Sunday.

Regarding hospital admissions, the DGS epidemiological bulletin reveals that 3,367 patients are hospitalised (new maximum), 99 more than the previous day, of which 513 are in intensive care, one less than the day before.

Of the 78 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, 38 occurred in the North region, 24 in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 14 in the Centre region and two in the Alentejo.

According to the DGS bulletin, the North region has the highest number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in the last 24 hours (1,231), totalling 170,952 cases and 2,431 deaths since March.

In the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, 917 new cases were reported, with 106,138 cases of infection and 1,751 deaths so far.

In the Central region there were 292 more cases of covid-19, totalling 33,154, and 657 deaths since March.

In the Alentejo, another 92 cases were reported, totalling 6,950 cases and 127 deaths since the epidemic began in Portugal.

The Algarve region has today reported 35 new cases, adding up to 5,714 cases and 55 deaths.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, 21 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, totalling 1,192 infections detected and 18 dead since the beginning of the pandemic.

Madeira registered nine new cases. Since March, the autonomous region has accounted for 971 infections and two deaths.

Confirmed cases are distributed across all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years of age.

Of the total fatalities, 2,640 were men and 2,401 women.

The largest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

The country has been in a state of emergency since November 9 and until December 23, a period during which there is a mandatory curfew in counties with the highest risk of contagion.

During the week, the curfew must be respected between 23:00 and 05:00, while on weekends and holidays, circulation is limited between 13:00 on Saturday and 05:00 on Sunday, and between 13:00 on Sunday and 05:00 on Monday.
