The Minister of National Defense has announced his intention to publish an order in January to reform the military health system (SSM), which will then be led by the Armed Forces General Staff (EMGFA).

João Gomes Cravinho said: "The reform of the SSM is now consolidated and in January I will make a final order on the new model, followed by an implementation process led by EMGFA, which will produce important gains in terms of effectiveness and financial sustainability, with greater coherence in its governance structure," he said.

According to documents to which The Lusa Agency had access, this reform provides, among other things, the centralisation of the management and placement of medical officers, dentists, veterinarians, pharmacists, nurses and psychologists in EMGFA, instead of each branch of the Armed Forces (Navy, Army and Air Force) having autonomy in this sector.
