"From June 1, the municipality will activate the 21 radars recently replaced by new equipment with more advanced technology", indicates the municipality, referring that the entry into operation of the other 20 radars in new locations will occur from the same date, but “in a gradual way”.

The municipality states that the objective of the new radars is to “increase road safety and reduce accidents in the city of Lisbon”, and the City Council intends to “focus on strengthening of traffic calming measures, either in terms of changes in the road infrastructure or in terms of strengthening road safety systems”.

In the press release the Lisbon City Council reveals that, in addition to the traffic signals that result from the Traffic Signalling Regulation (H43 signal), “information panels” were installed in all the locations of the new radars, “in order to raise awareness among citizens for the need to practice lower speeds, promoting a Lisbon + Safe”.

New speed radars

Henrique (two-way), Avenida de Ceuta (two-way), Avenida General Correia Barreto (two-way), Avenida Marechal António Spinola (two-way), Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho, Avenida Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, Avenida da República, Campo Grande, Avenida Cidade do Porto, Avenida João XXI, Avenida Afonso Costa, Tunnel Marquês de Pombal, Avenida Marechal Craveiro Lopes and Avenida das Descobertas.

Regarding the 20 new locations, they were decided based on the monitoring of the accident rate in the city of Lisbon, carried out by the municipality in conjunction with the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), considering “three criteria: controlling the entrances and exits of the city, complement existing radar positions and mitigate risk factors, especially roads with steep slopes and with three lanes of traffic in the same direction”.
