Costa “disappointed” with US Supreme Court decision on abortion rights

Prime Minister, António Costa, has stated he is “disappointed” with the decision of the United States Supreme Court, which annulled the protection of the right to abortion in force in the country since 1973.

“It is impossible not to be disappointed with the decision of the US Supreme Court that opens the way for the illegalisation of abortion”, wrote António Costa on Twitter.

“I have always defended that issues of political, religious and ethical conscience cannot be criminalised. These are women's rights, which all states must respect,” he added.

The US Supreme Court on Friday overturned the country's 49-year-old protection of the right to abortion, in a landmark decision that will allow each state to decide whether to uphold or ban that right.

Firstly, it has nothing to do with Portugal or the rest of the world. Secondly, it places responsibility for abortion laws back to the states, rather than Federal interference. Thirdly, abortion laws are far too lax in some parts of America where abortions are performed up until the moment of birth.

Ian from Other is wildly misinformed about U.S. abortion laws. This is an issue for Portugal and the rest of the world for many reasons, not the least of which is the manufacture of birth control medications may well be seriously curtailed because of this decision - with world-wide impact.
