According to quick statistics on tourist activity, in September, the tourist accommodation sector registered 3.2 million guests, which corresponds to an increase of 9% compared to the same month of the previous year.
The growth in overnight stays was due to the increase in non-resident markets, which grew 11.3% to 5.9 million, with resident overnight stays recording a decrease of 3.3%, to 2.3 million.
North American market
In foreign markets, Canada and the United States continued to stand out, with the highest growth rates (33.7% and 23.7%, respectively).
The Austrian market also recorded significant growth of 21.5%.
The increases in overnight stays were most significant in the North region (13.5%), the Centre (12.3%) and the Azores (9.8%).
Regarding occupancy in tourist accommodation establishments, there was an increase of one percentage point in September, to 57.3% net bed occupancy rate and a further 1.3 percentage points, to 69.2% net rate of room occupancy.
In the third quarter as a whole, overnight stays increased by 3.2%, as a result of the growth in overnight stays from non-residents (+7.2%), with the domestic market recording a decrease of 4.4%, added INE.
The Portuguese market desperately needs better air connections with routes to Los Angeles, Houston, Seattle, Atlanta, Dalllas, etc., instead of such an excessive focus in Brazil and Africa.
