According to a source from the Portuguese airline, flight TP211 landed "in absolute safety".

The same source did not immediately clarify when and how the flight to Newark, New York, would be resumed.

According to the website that tracks flights around the world, Flight Radar, the TAP Airbus A321 that departed from Porto landed at St. Johns International Airport at 22:46 on Monday (Portuguese time).

According to a note from TAP, situations related to cabin air quality (CAQ), which includes odours/fumes/smokes, are "events that have for many years deserved global attention from operators and manufacturers in the commercial aviation industry".

These occurrences with intense or unpleasant odours on board may be due to odours in the ventilation system (antifreeze, electrical or ventilation failure, engine oil or fuel, among others) or items in the cabin/cockpit (hand luggage, cleaning products, disinfectants or pest control products).

"Most of the odours identified on board as being strange or unusual are not necessarily associated with substances that cause the appearance of physiological reactions," TAP highlighted.

The airline highlighted that "these events are monitored continuously and in detail by TAP, through crew reports (…) in order to adapt mitigation measures to eliminate occurrences".

"TAP has been very attentive to these episodes, even though in the universe of all flights these are a residual percentage, which has not prevented us from making every effort to clarify any doubts and actively and persistently seek solutions available in the industry", it also highlighted in the note about this type of occurrence.

According to the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF), in 2024, there were 1,249 reports of this type of occurrence in the European database, an issue that has been the subject of attention by the industry, investigation bodies and EASA, the European regulator.
