On each of the three nights, by 9 pm, in Passeio das Dunas, each neighbourhood and street of Quarteira will perform on the Marchas Populares parade.

Each group will present “elaborate costumes, carefully rehearsed choreography and original lyrics celebrating local culture, the three saints — Santo António, São João e São Pedro — and the soul of the community.”

There will also be a popular festival, in the different streets of the city, where music will be played, as well as the opportunity of eating the traditional grilled sardines or even caldo verde. Popular artists will be the soundtrack for the festivities.

“On the 6th and 7th, the party takes place on Rua Vasco, with musicians Roberto Bernardino and Hélder Pires. Fábio Emanuel will be on Rua da Alegria on the eve of the holiday, the 9th. And for Rua da Cabine, the proposals are dances with Ricardo Laginha (13th) and Duo Rui Miguel (14th). The festival on Rua da Gaivota is with Hélder Pires, on the night of 18 June. The party takes place on Rua da Fonte, with Vitória and Bruno (Ritmos do Sul) on the 20th and Paulo Coelho on the 21st. Finally, on Rua da Madrugada there will be a festival with João Paulo Cavaco (27th) and Tozé Pratas and Dina Teresa (28th).”

The manjericos will also be an important feature to the festivities, while celebrating the love, available to buy on Largo do Centro Autárquico “on 12, 18 and 25 June, between 9.30am and 1pm, pots of basil, adorned with a coloured paper carnation and a small flag bearing a verse alluding to love or the celebrations of the saints, will be on sale in Largo do Centro Autárquico. The money raised from this initiative will go to institutions in the parish.”

In the press release, the municipality of Loulé highlights that “the celebration of the Popular Saints has been a hallmark of this old fishing village for many years and is one of the biggest popular events in the municipality of Loulé.” The streets will be filled with “colour, music, Marchas Populares and a contagious energy that attracts thousands of visitors, locals and tourists.”

The festivities are organised by APROMAR, with the support of the Municipality of Loulé and the Parish Council of Quarteira.
