For Wednesday, the IPMA had already issued orange weather warnings for all of mainland Portugal, except for the district of Bragança, due to heavy rain.
The warnings for rough seas affect the districts of Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga and will be in effect between 00:00 and 09:00 on Thursday, when waves from the west/northwest are expected with a significant height of 5 to 6 metres, potentially reaching a maximum height of 9 metres.
In a previous statement, IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) had already placed the districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga under a yellow warning starting at 9 PM today due to rough seas, with waves from the west/southwest expected to reach 4 to 5 metres.
IPMA also issued an orange warning for 17 districts of mainland Portugal, except Bragança, between 3 AM and 9 AM on Wednesday, then changing to yellow until midnight on Thursday due to rain, which may be heavy at times.
These 17 districts will also be under a yellow warning due to the forecast of conditions favourable to thunderstorms and extreme wind phenomena between 3 AM and 9 AM on Wednesday.
The Bragança district will be under a yellow warning due to occasionally heavy rain between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Wednesday.
The IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) has also issued a yellow warning for the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga due to the forecast of strong winds from the south quadrant, with gusts of around 80 kilometers per hour (km/h) on the coast, and around 100 km/h in the highlands.
The yellow warning for strong winds will be in effect between 9:00 PM today and 9:00 AM on Wednesday.
The orange warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a "moderate to high risk weather situation," and the yellow warning is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather situation.
