“Our country does not have excessive crime, the district of Aveiro does not have excessive crime. But we have some crimes that are worrying, and among them we have, for example, a true national scourge, which is domestic violence,” he highlighted at the inauguration ceremony of the GNR Territorial Post in Oliveira do Bairro, in the district of Aveiro.

In his speech, Telmo Correia argued that it is fundamental for a victim of domestic violence, “a crime systematically reported by the security forces,” to be heard safely and privately, and contributing to this are the improvements being made to the buildings of the different police forces.

“These modernised facilities guarantee us these conditions, they guarantee us this privacy. On the other hand, they are naturally very important for those who will serve in them and provide their service to Portugal,” he maintained.

Throughout his speech, the minister also recalled that of the approximately one thousand GNR (National Republican Guard) posts and PSP (Public Security Police) stations, “a very significant number need intervention,” “with 335 interventions planned in the Programming Law, whose framework will end in 2026,” with 130 of them considered “critical or urgent.”

“Given this dimension, what we are seeking to do is accelerate these investments, so that their execution rate is higher,” he indicated.

According to Telmo Correia, the infrastructure execution rate would have increased from 8% in 2023 to 30% by the end of this year.

“Our goal is to have 60 rehabilitation or new construction projects completed by the end of 2026 – we're talking about between the second quarter of 2024 and the end of 2026. This is the effort we are making, a remarkable effort, when it's not possible to go everywhere or respond to everything, but if we do it and if we succeed, it will be a very significant change,” he concluded.
