The SOS Cagarro 2025 campaign rescued 7,890 Cory’s shearwaters in the Azores, surpassing last year’s total, with 7,577 juveniles released near the sea, and continued veterinary support through agreements with seven clinics across the islands.

Founded in 1995, the initiative protects a species of which roughly 75 percent of the global population nests in the Azores.
The government announced that the region is developing measures to mitigate the impacts of light pollution, including the LuMinAves programme, combining seabird conservation with energy efficiency and spatial planning.
