In a statement, IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) states that the Goretti depression has "an associated cold front with weak to moderate activity, influencing the weather on the mainland" on 8 and 9 January.
Thus, rain is expected today, generally light, mainly in the North and Centre, "which will be temporarily moderate in Minho and Douro Litoral from the late afternoon".
Also today, there will be a possibility of snowfall in the highest points of the Serra da Estrela from the afternoon, and the wind will be weak to moderate, predominantly from the southwest, "sometimes blowing strongly on the coastal strip north of Cabo Carvoeiro and in the highlands from the afternoon".
For 9 January, after the passage of the cold front, light showers are expected, which will be snow above 1,000/1,200 metres of altitude, adds IPMA.
On that day, the wind will be from the "west quadrant, sometimes blowing strongly in the high areas, with gusts of up to 75 kilometres/hour".
On the North and Central coast, on 9 and 10 January, northwest waves of three to four meters are expected, the note also states.
