Given that major airlines such as TAP Air Portugal, Delta, United, and American Airlines offer direct flights from New York, Miami, Boston, Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco, the number of US expatriates increased by 36% in 2025.
The percentage increase in American tourists is not yet known for certain, but everything points to it being significant.
The total number of British passengers has not yet been released, but it is known that UK citizens spent around £2.2 billion in Portugal.
This figure is justified by the fact that Portugal remains one of the favourite destinations for British tourists, who statistically tend to spend more money when travelling abroad.
According to forecasts, the amount British tourists spend in the country is expected to rise by around 6% by 2028.

And that's a good thing?? Portugal is being sold out to Americans, Canadians, Chinese, Japanese....

And why is that a problem @Fred Doe?

There are about 20,000 Americans living in Portugal. I have asked numerous Portuguese friends and neighbors over the past few years, "How many Americans do you think live in Portugal?" The number ranges from 20,000 to 500,000. The answer is usually at least 200,000.

Thank you, Matt. I, too, have noticed the over-inflated numbers of Americans imagined by residents of PT. Amusing that many who believe this are not from Portugal, but from Britain, Sweden, etc and out number Americans by a significant amount

There’s no need to guess how many Americans are living in Portugal because AIMA publishes the actual data. Of the top 20 nationalities in Portugal Americans rank 18 at 14,000 or 1.4% of the total population. Can we stop the collective pearl clutching now. Americans are the invaders they’re made out to be. Also, Marcel, let’s add actual data to your articles please.

Americans barely make any difference in Portugal. We aren't 1.4% of the population. 14.000 is about 0,14% (of 10 million). Americans aren't coming here to invade or change Portugal. Most are coming because they really like the country and some come to escape the arrogant, narcissistic running, or ruining, the US at the moment. I came because I also love the language, people and quality of life.
