Idanha-a-Nova demands recognition for severe drought

The Idanha-a-Nova City Council has asked the government to recognise the municipality as a territory in severe drought or extreme drought, the mayor said

In this context, the Chamber forwarded to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development a request, unanimously approved at a session of the Executive, to recognise Idanha-a-Nova as a county in severe drought or extreme drought.

The objective of this measure is to enable farmers in this municipality of Castelo Branco district to have access to support measures to cope with the existing drought and thus be able to continue their crops and contribute to boosting the local economy, to the detriment of huge losses.

The Mayor of Idanha-a-Nova, the socialist Armindo Jacinto, explained that, after consulting with the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Centre (DRAPC), the answer given by this entity was that they had given information to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development to include the municipality in the list.

"My reading is that the first entity contacted, DRAPC's planning office, informed the tutelage that Idanha-a-Nova should be included as a county in severe drought or extreme drought. Not being included, we took this proposal to the chamber session and it was approved unanimously", he said.

Armindo Jacinto wants the Ministry of Agriculture to review its position and include Idanha-a-Nova in the list of municipalities in severe or extreme drought: "This situation is expected to be reviewed."

In the document sent to the tutelage, the executive recalls that the drought situation in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova has been aggravated by the low rainfall and high temperatures that have occurred in recent years.

Due to these weather conditions, the county, in terms of agriculture, "has significant difficulties, there are farms where water scarcity compromises the water for animals and the maintenance of permanent crops".
