At 10.30am there were a total of 129 operatives still on the ground in Monchique, supported by 47 vehicles.
A civil protection spokesman told Lusa that the firefighting operation had been hampered by difficult access and strongwinds, however temperatures and wind speeds have now dropped and “conditions are not expected to change significantly”.
The fire was officially deemed as under control yesterday evening at 6.42pm, with the operation involving more than 200 firefighters and 10 aircraft in support at its peak.
No injuries have been reported or damage to property.
The fire initially began in Chã da Casinha, in the north of the municipality of Monchique, near to the border of Odemira.
This government is an absolute joke.
After 100 people died in Pedragao and the huge fires last year. The government forced the GNR to make us chop down all the trees around our properties and thousands of euros worth of fines were dished out.
However the huge elephant in the room is the millions of hectares of highly flammable eucalyptus that is owned by corporations. Come on Portugal wake up and tackle this head on. The government is not our friends and doest not hold our interests at heart. The people of Monchique are suing the government for the millions of euros received from the EU for not one cent arriving to the victims.
