Evictions on the rise in Portugal

Evictions are on the rise in Portugal following the lifting of a pandemic-related ban.

Since the lifting of the ban on lease terminations in Portugal after the initial pandemic period, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of evictions.

Data collected by Público newspaper reveals that Lisbon has seen a surge in the number of tenants forced to leave their homes, surpassing pre-pandemic figures.

I had many rental properties in Portugal, slowly but surely everyone was evicted and all properties sold, if you think its easy to invest in rental properties think again, no contracts can be honered or executed, we are the surrogate social housing holders for the government, once you rent a property and hand over the keys, you have lost that property, it no longer belongs to you, only for tax purposes you are the owner, to pay tax and then tolerate the undue mental stress the games the tenants play, they know all the scams, old people, sick people, couples or singles with children, they have no hope. If there was strong government support it might work but I hold no hope, if you are in the Algarve then it's worse.

I totally agree with Mr. John. A landlord should always have the right to recover vacant possession of their rented property, simply because it's theirs. To suggest otherwise would be a grave violation of a fundamental human right: to own property, use it or dispose of it as you see fit. Unfortunately the Portuguese govt is moving in the other direction with dictatorial laws to 'protect' tenants. The assumption here is that all landlords are rogues, unfit to be trusted which is clearly not true in all cases. Unless the govt stops demonising landlords and eroding their human rights, there will be an exacerbation of the housing crisis, with far fewer rentals available. But don't expect common sense and pragmatism to get in the way of Socialist dogma or fanaticism.

As someone who recently purchased property in Lisbon with the intent to make it my home, I was completely blindsided by Portuguese laws that allow the tenants that were supposed to move out of the apartment early this year to extend for a long period of time. There are no protection clauses to help the person who owns the property and wants to make it there home. It's very sad now because I can't live in the property I bought, and now need to rent, which doesn't make any logical sense.
