The news was disclosed by Jornal de Notícias, which provided concrete data on the closure of accommodations last year.

“In the last seven years, the ASAE has suspended 94 local accommodations (AL) and instituted 2,210 administrative offenses, however, in 2023 there were irregularities detected in this activity. There have never been so many local accommodations in non-compliance and suspensions than in 2023, which amounted to 49, compared to five in 2022, in the country, and 20 compared to two in 2022, in Lisbon.

In 2023 alone, ASAE received 491 complaints regarding irregularities in these spaces”, reads the article, which also mentioned that “in the last seven years, 2,210 administrative offenses and 30 crimes occurred in local accommodation across the country. In Lisbon, 299 administrative offenses were initiated and seven crimes were registered in accommodations, with the suspension of 48 spaces, since 2017”.

The majority of these administrative offenses are related to the “lack of hygiene in the establishment, such as pests and bugs, which is the usual issue we find, and also some situations such as lack of insurance”, with the “most serious” offenses regarding “habitability and hygiene conditions”.
