In a statement, ISCTE explained that the new centre will be located adjacent to its facilities, in a space provided by the city council. The university will provide the technicians who will assist migrants, while AIMA will train them and connect them to the national database.
“Migrant integration issues affect all institutions, but some, such as universities, have additional responsibilities,” said Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues, rector of ISCTE, quoted in the statement.
According to the rector, ISCTE is responsible for establishing and operating this CLAIM "because it believes it should not limit itself to ensuring good conditions for its foreign students and immigrant staff: it must also take an active role in initiatives that promote the reception and integration of all migrants."
ISCTE's migration initiatives include the Academia Mais Integração (More Integration Academy) in Fundão, which trains professionals from the public, private, and social solidarity sectors in partnership with the University of Beira Interior and the Fundão City Council.
The Emigration Observatory, based at the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-ISCTE), also constitutes an independent technical and research structure dedicated to the study of migration phenomena, supported by the university.
The technicians assigned to CLAIM will be tasked with supporting migrants in areas such as document regularization, international protection, access to public services, and community integration, while also ensuring the registration of services and participation in specific training activities.
The center, which is expected to begin operations in November, will be part of the CLAIM Network coordinated by AIMA, which has several units throughout the country.
On Friday, the protocol between the University and AIMA will be signed in the Audax building, where the ISCTE Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is located.
Shouldn't they be setting up Deportation centres?
