The energy-efficient LED lighting will operate until January 6, between 5:30 pm and 1:00 am, the municipality confirmed in a written statement sent to Lusa.
The daily operation period of seven and a half hours will allow for energy savings, as has been the case in recent years, the City Council added.
According to the local authority, this year's investment of €149,600, plus 23% VAT (Value Added Tax, totalling €184,008), represents a 2.1% increase compared to last year's total expenditure of €146,500 (plus VAT).
The Christmas decorations will cover the city's main thoroughfares and commercial areas, contributing to the festive atmosphere and liveliness in the urban centre and to its attractiveness, especially in the city centre, the statement says.
In addition to the lighting, the municipality maintains initiatives to boost local commerce and the traditional Christmas tree, contributing to the festive atmosphere.
