According to a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Union which is now in effect, the ISP rate applicable, on the mainland, to petrol with a lead content equal to or less than 0.013 grams per litre will be €497.52 per 1,000 litres, compared to the current €481.26.
The ISP rate applicable to diesel will rise from the current €337.21 to €361.60 per 1,000 litres.
According to estimates from the Automobile Club of Portugal (ACP), these figures represent an effective increase in the tax per litre of approximately 1.6 cents for petrol and more than two cents for diesel.
The government says that this revision is happening “in line with the recommendations of the European Commission,” which aim at the progressive elimination, “as the evolution of the energy market allows,” of the “exceptional and temporary” measures taken to mitigate the increase in fuel prices that occurred with the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"In this context, this decree partially reverses the extraordinary and temporary measures, updating the unit rates of the ISP (Special Consumption Tax) on gasoline and diesel, promoting the indispensable gradual reversal of the temporary measures adopted under the ISP," the document reads.
