In a statement, Carris Metropolitana reported that 5.8 million trips were made, "reinforcing the daily response to the region's mobility," highlighting the significant growth compared to 2024 in municipalities such as Palmela (+26%), Moita (+23%), Cascais (+19%), Montijo (+17%) and Setúbal (+16%).
The year 2025 was also marked by a record number of passengers transported by Carris Metropolitana on a weekday, on 15 October, with 763,000 passengers. Historical highs were also recorded on weekends, with 340,500 passengers on a Saturday, 31 May, and 310,300 passengers on a Sunday or holiday, 15 August.
Last year, Carris Metropolitana's operations recorded 90 million kilometres travelled.
According to the company, all municipalities in the AML contributed to the results, with "multiple record-breaking figures on weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, showing an increasingly regular use of public transport throughout the week."
"The 2025 results demonstrate that Carris Metropolitana is now an increasingly robust and reliable alternative for those who travel daily between municipalities. The sustained growth in demand reflects the continuous investment in service quality, territorial coverage, and coordination with other modes of transport, placing people at the centre of metropolitan mobility," emphasises Carris Metropolitana.
The company says that, in 2025, the volumes of passengers transported in municipalities such as Sintra (30.4 million), Loures (23.5 million), Lisbon (20.4 million), Almada (19.5 million) and Seixal (17.3 million) stand out.
According to data from Carris Metropolitana, the total number of passengers transported to Lisbon was 69.8 million, while the total number of passengers transported over the Tagus River was 12.2 million.
The growth compared to 2024 was across the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with significant increases in Palmela (+26%), Moita (+23%), Cascais (+19%), Montijo (+17%) and Setúbal (+16%).
According to Carris Metropolitana, the most used lines “highlight the importance of connections between municipalities”, examples being the 1715 (Belém – Mira Sintra), the 2711 (Charneca – Lisboa Oriente), the 2790 (Alverca – Lisboa Areeiro) or the 3508 (Cacilhas – Paio Pires), among others.
The growth in demand was also reflected in the network's main terminals, with the Agualva-Cacém (+36%), Portela de Sintra (+27%), Gare do Oriente (+23%), Pragal (+20%) and Amadora (+16%) stations standing out between 2024 and 2025.
