Muralha Fernandina is one of the most important historical structures in Porto. This medieval wall runs through the historic centre. It stands out for its solid stone towers and battlements, which are very different from the surrounding modern buildings. Nowadays, people walk past it without even noticing the importance it once had in the city’s defence.

It was constructed in the 14th century, during the reign of King D. Fernando I, hence the name “Fernandina”. It was part of an expansion project when the old city walls from earlier times were found to be too small for Porto's growth, so the new ones were built larger, about 2.5 km long, with towers up to 21 metres high. Only some parts remain standing today.

Muralha Fernandina is a reminder of Porto’s strong past and its place in history. Have you walked along Muralha Fernandina? What’s your favourite historic spot in Porto?
