The 74-year-old singer was admitted to a hospital in Portugal last week, where she owns a home, and was later placed in a medically induced coma to support her recovery. Her representatives said doctors remain optimistic that she will make a full recovery despite the seriousness of her condition.
In the latest update, Tyler’s family also addressed what they described as “lurid and untrue rumours” circulating online and in parts of the media, asking for privacy while she continues treatment. Reports in several European outlets suggested confusion around unofficial comments being made publicly about her condition, something her team appeared keen to shut down.
Tyler first underwent emergency surgery after being rushed to the hospital in Faro. Earlier statements from her management said the operation itself had been successful and that she was recuperating.
Some European media outlets have also reported that Tyler suffered complications during her recovery, including claims of a cardiac arrest while doctors attempted to wake her from the induced coma, although these reports have not been formally confirmed by her family.
The singer’s official website still lists a number of upcoming European tour dates later this year, although at least one scheduled appearance in Germany at the end of May has reportedly now been cancelled while she focuses on recovering.
Tyler, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, became one of the defining voices of the 1980s with global hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It’s a Heartache. She was awarded an MBE in 2023 for services to music.
