On the beaches of Vale Olival, N. S. da Rocha, Vale Centeanes, Carvoeiro, Caneiros and Praia Grande (Ferragudo) the "Blue Flag of Europe" was hoisted on the morning of 22 June. The award highlights beaches that meet a set of criteria related to water quality, environmental management, equipment, safety and services.

At the same time, the «Accessible Beach» flag was awarded to the beaches of Carvoeiro and N. S. da Rocha. This second distinction results from the fulfilment of rules that facilitate the use of the sands by people with reduced mobility. The two beaches in the municipality of Lagoa highlighted as «Accessible Beach» provide, for example, amphibious chairs that allow bathing to this special group of users.

The municipal initiative «Carvoeiro - Inclusibilidade Acessiva» also offers people with reduced mobility other possibilities for enjoyment. On the route between the beach and the concession area, wooden walkways on the sand were installed as part of this project. The cooperation between the bathing support concessionaire and the Municipality of Lagoa has also made it possible to create a shaded space, especially adapted for people in wheelchairs.

It should be remembered that near the beach of Carvoeiro there is still a route of discovery of nature along the cliffs, with about 500m, between the Fort of N. S. da Encarnação and Algar Seco which can also be covered by people with disabilities.

This flag-raising session was attended by the Mayor of the Municipality, Luís Encarnação, the Councillor for the Beaches and Coastal Coast, Jorge Pardal, the Maritime Authority, the Health Authority, and representatives of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) - Algarve.

At all points of access to the beaches, it is recommended to apply the health prevention measures indicated by the General Directorate of Health, namely the use of a mask and shoes, and the distance of 2 metres between people who do not belong to the same group.
