The species had nearly disappeared due to pesticide use and habitat loss, but the population has now recovered to several hundred birds along the Euphrates. Birds are protected during breeding season and released at other times. The project is considered a long-term conservation success.
The ibis, known locally as the “herald of spring,” holds cultural significance and returns each year. The programme combines controlled breeding, habitat protection and seasonal migration management. International cooperation has supported the effort. The model shows how consistent, long-term conservation strategies can restore endangered species while maintaining ecological balance and cultural heritage.
