Torre dos Clérigos in Porto is the city’s most iconic bell tower, often called the symbol of Porto for its iconic imagery that rises above the historic centre. Built between 1754 and 1763 to the design of the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, it stands about 75–76 metres tall and is Portugal’s tallest historic church tower, classified as a National Monument.
The tower sits just above the Igreja dos Clérigos, at the top of a steep staircase on Rua de São Filipe de Nery, in the heart of the Baixa district. From the street, you see its slim granite body, carved stonework, and clock faces. It is also possible to go to the top of this tower and have a panoramic view over the historical centre of Porto, where you can see the Douro River, and the rooftops of Porto’s historic churches and palaces.
Have you visited Torre dos Clérigos? Did you see the panoramic view?
