According to the local council, the Regulation for the Promotion of Birth and Adoption is now in effect. “With this support, we aim to expand on the assistance we already provide across education and social support,” said Mayor João Lobo.
The scheme applies to children born or adopted after the regulation’s entry into force. To qualify, parents or legal guardians must have been living in the municipality for at least 12 consecutive months from the child’s birth or adoption.
Eligible children must be residents of Proença-a-Nova and either under three years of age in the case of birth, or under six if adopted.
The €1,500 grant is distributed over three years, with up to €500 reimbursed annually. Families can claim expenses related to nurseries, medical appointments, medicines, hygiene products, childcare items, clothing, footwear, food, and children’s furniture—provided purchases are made within the municipality.
To apply, families must complete a form available online or at the council’s main service desk. Required documents include the child’s birth certificate, proof of residence, IBAN, a debt-free declaration or authorisation for tax checks, and, where applicable, legal confirmation of custody.
Receipts for expenses must be submitted three times a year to the council’s Social Services, with reimbursements processed within 45 days.
Support will be withdrawn in cases of false declarations or if the family moves outside the municipality.
“This is direct support for families and a boost for local development, encouraging both birth and adoption while supporting local businesses,” said João Lobo. “It offers financial relief and stimulates the local economy."
A total waste of taxpayers' funds. It's not the government's or council's responsibility to pay your bills or finance your lifestyle. It's time people took responsibility for their lives, instead of burdening the taxpayer.
