The decision was approved at the meeting of the Regional Government Council (PSD/CDS-PP), chaired by the Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, which took place in Funchal, and covers all public employees who are “not absolutely necessary to guarantee the functioning of essential services”.
In a statement, the Madeiran executive explains that regional public administration workers who are required to work on those days may take the granted leave at a later time, with the agreement of their respective superiors.
At the meeting, the proposed regional legislative decree was also approved, setting the guaranteed minimum monthly wage in the Autonomous Region of Madeira at €980, effective from January 1, 2026.
Currently, the minimum wage in the region is €915.
