In a statement and “as a civil protection agency”, the CVP warns of “a sharp drop in temperatures and worsening weather conditions forecast for the coming days as the Ingrid depression passes over mainland Portugal”, specifying that “heavy rain, strong winds and snowfall are expected in several regions, with conditions that may make travel and daily life more difficult”.

“In situations of extreme cold, prevention is essential. Small gestures can make the difference between risk and safety, especially among the most vulnerable populations. We are on the ground to provide support, but protection begins in every home and every community,” said Gonçalo Orfão, the institution’s National Emergency Coordinator, quoted in the statement.

It is therefore recommended that unnecessary travel and prolonged exposure to the cold be avoided, that warm clothing and several layers of clothing be worn, and that “homes be adequately heated, ensuring safe ventilation to avoid the risk of gas poisoning”.

The CVP also advises drinking more fluids and eating hot meals “to maintain body temperature” and to be “alert to signs of hypothermia (severe shivering, confusion, drowsiness)”, in which case “immediate medical attention should be sought”.

“The elderly, homeless people, those with chronic illnesses, children, isolated people and families with fewer socio-economic resources are more exposed to the effects of intense cold and extreme conditions and may face risks such as hypothermia, worsening respiratory diseases or accidents related to snow and ice,” it stresses.
