According to information released by the Government, “this amount includes €45 million for the creation of workshops and equipment, ensuring the operational and maintenance capacity of the new rolling stock.”

The decision to acquire the railcars coincides with the construction of the High-Speed Rail line between Lisbon and Porto.

Also approved was “the anticipation and completion of the acquisition of 153 railcars for conventional rail service, with the last delivery brought forward from 2033 to 2031 and the first scheduled for 2029, reinforcing the supply and reliability of rail transport throughout the country.”

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, quoted on the Government website, stressed that "the High-Speed Rail lines are, alongside the New Lisbon Airport, the largest projects that the country will undertake this century."

The Minister also said that "these are projects that require a broad consensus," and therefore "it is crucial that there is, as I know there is, a strong national consensus on high-speed rail and, in general, on the importance of investment in railways. This, for me, is a great sign of democratic maturity."
