Miracle of the Roses / O Milagre das Rosas, published by Riso Books, follows the well-known story when Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal’s secret acts of charity were revealed, but it also goes further, exploring her role as a peacemaker during a time of conflict.

According to the story, after promising the Holy Spirit she would prevent war, the queen brought her community together by organising a feast for the entire village — a tradition that still exists today in Portuguese communities around the world.

Through this, the book introduces younger readers to themes of generosity, humility and compassion, while also reflecting traditions that remain part of Portuguese cultural life.

Author Angela Costa Simões said the story is closely tied to her own upbringing. “I grew up hearing the story of the Miracle of the Roses and attending the festivals linked to it,” she said. “While writing the book, I realised there was more to Queen Isabel — particularly her role in bringing people together and promoting peace.”

She also emphasised the importance of telling the story in two languages, particularly for families navigating both Portuguese and English. “It’s a way of keeping traditions alive while making them accessible,” she said.

The illustrations, by Portugal-based artist Mariana Flores, add a warm, expressive layer to the story, while historical guidance from Monique Kelly Vallance ensures accuracy.

Aimed at children, families and educators, the book is designed for use both at home and in schools, introducing themes of generosity, faith and community through a story that remains part of Portuguese cultural life today.

The book is now available in hardcover and paperback, including online via major retailers such as Amazon.
